After the success of the previous edition, the white village of Mijas will celebrate its second Luna Mora Festival. Last year, this unique event managed to attract more than 20,000 visitors and organisers are hoping to more than double that figure attracting over 45,000 people to this years festivities.
One of the highlights of this year’s event is the fact that it will be celebrated over two consecutive weekends; from the 17th to 19th July and from the 31st July to 2nd August. The other notable addition this year is that all the activities and attractions will extend into the centre of town multiplying the festivals surface area by five.
The Luna Mora Festival is well known for its spectacular lighting using candles to illuminate the town. This year more than 60,000 candles (10,000 each night) will light up the walls of ‘la muralla’ and the streets of the town to create a truly breathtaking spectacle which you won’t want to miss.
Visitors to the Festival will be able to enjoy and take part in dozens of free activities and shows which merge andalusí and flamenco culture. They’ll also be able to stroll through the Moorish Market and take part in themed workshops for both adults and children.
The town’s Miguel González Berral Auditorium will feature important performances and concerts including a Flamenco piano recital by the talented ‘Dorantes’, also known as the ‘jewel of flamenco and piano’ on Saturday the 18th July.
Flamenco lovers won’t want to miss the Flamenco show on Friday 31st July paying homage to the late Manuel Montoya and performed by his artistic partner, Lole Montoya. Tickets for both events can be purchased at ticket offices in Mijas, Las Lagunas and La Cala.
Due to the large number of visitors expected to attend the festival, the Mijas town hall has enabled extra parking areas and there will also be special shuttle buses running between these and the centre of town. Those who don’t wish to travel to the Festival by car can do so using the local bus service from Fuengirola which will run until 1:00am during the event.
