If you’re looking for a fun and very healthy activity next time you come to Benalmadena on holiday, we highly recommend renting a bicycle and exploring some of the town’s main attractions whilst reaping the health benefits of this fun mode of transport.

The area offers something for all levels. Beginners and leisure riders can enjoy the relative flatness of the stunning promenade. More experienced riders or a beginners with hybrid bikes, who are looking for more of a challenge can head into the hills behind Benalmadena and attempt one of the harder bike routes (see below) which will take them along narrow mountain paths offering stunning views of the coast.

 

Where to rent a bike in Benalmadena

You’ll obviously have to rent a bike whilst you’re in Benalmadena and whilst there are a few places you could do this, it really depends on your needs.

At Sunset Beach Club we offer guests two options: If you’re just looking to spend a couple of hours riding along the promenade with the family, taking in the views and stopping every now and then to enjoy a refreshment or a tapa, you can hire a bike from Boyd’s Gym on the first floor of the hotel.

If you’re looking for a more professional bike or want to go on an organised cycling excursion, we’ve recently started working with our friends at Fast Monkey who have a fantastic selection of bikes for hire. (See below)

 

Types of Bikes available + prices

Boyd’s Gym have standard bikes suitable for adults and children and the prices are as follows:

Daily Hire: €10 per day

3 Days: €27

7 Days: €50

A deposit of €50 is required per bike or a picture ID such as driving license or passport can be left. All bikes come with a lock and helmet and a disclaimer must be signed by all customers.

The guys at Fast Monkey offer a fantastic selection of bikes for rent. From standard city bikes to battery-powered e-bikes – for those who need a little help – and more advanced and professional mountain and road bikes.

Cycling routes in Benalmadena

You’ll find hundreds of cycling routes in and around Benalmadena to suit all levels from smooth and gentle pathways ideal for all the Family to steeper and more abrupt trails for more experienced and thrill-seeking mountain bikers.

If you head over to the Wikiloc website you’ll find literally hundreds of possible cycling routes with detailed information. You’ll find photos, distance, approximate times for completion, difficulty level and, most importantly, a detailed map of each trail using Google maps and GPS coordinates uploaded by other cyclists. There’s plenty to keep you busy!

If you don’t fancy setting out on your own adventure – but would still like to go on one of these cycling routes – the team at Fast Monkey offer some fabulous daily bike excursions into the mountains as well as a very popular Tapas Bike Tour.

All routes are run by experienced guides and include the following:

Please note that the route lasts approximately 4 hours and departure times can be in the morning or afternoon depending on level and experience of the group. Group sizes must be a minimum of 5 riders or a maximum of 10 riders.

The price per adult of this guided route is €37.

Road Cycling Guided Tour

All road cycling tours are guided by an experienced guide and include the following:

• 1 day rental of carbon road bike (ORBEA Avant M30 105 50/34 Compact 11-28)
• An energy bar to replenish your strength en-route
• A briefing before departure with important information about the route
• Opportunity to upgrade to a more professional bike

As with the mountain bike tours, the road bike version also last approximately 4 hours with departure times available in the morning and afternoon. Minimum group size is 5 cyclists and maximum is 10 cyclists.

Tapas Bike Tour of Benalmadena & Torremolinos

This 4-hour bike tour is a great opportunity for foodies who wish to sample traditional Spanish tapas whilst taking in the stunning views along the way. The added advantage is that you get to burn off some calories too! 

The tour is priced at €35 per person and includes bike rental as well as food-tasting (3 tapas) along the way.

Málaga Bike Tour & Tapas

This tour is only available during the high season months when the ferry runs between Benalmádena and Málaga (please check with Fast Monkey for exact dates) but is well worth trying.

You’ll take the sightseeing ferry from Benalmadena Marina to Málaga Port from where your Malaga sightseeing and tapas experience will begin. You’ll visit famous landmarks and attractions including: Calle Larios, Atarazanas Food Market, the Historic Quarter, Málaga Cathedral, the Alcazaba Fortress and more.

This tour is priced at €49 per person and includes bike rental, 1 tapa and drink and your very own experienced tour guide. (Please note it does not include the ferry ticket)
