The Alcazaba as night falls...
Anyone visiting the Costa del Sol from the 6th to 10th June (2012) will have the opportunity to take part in a unique and special experience: A night tour of Málaga’s famous Alcazaba fortress.
For those of you who are not familiar with this emblematic monument in Málaga’s city centre: The Alcazaba is a Moorish fortification which was built in the 11th century. This impressive structure is built on hill in the centre of the city and comprises two walled enclosures; the first is built around the topography of the hill and the second wall – located within the perimeter of the first – is dotted with defensive towers. The beautiful gardens and magnificent enclosures make this one of the most popular tourist attractions in Málaga. (more…)

Getting rid of the red palm weevil...
The management at Sunset Beach Club has set itself the task of turning our hotel into a property which respects the environment and its surroundings; a specific and detailed environmental policy will allow us to become a ‘green’ hotel. To help us with this challenging task, we have partnered with local company, Biogrove.
With offices in Arroyo dela Miel, Biogrove specialises in preventative and healing treatments for the elimination of plagues and diseases in trees and plants. They also offer guidance in issues relating to the management of soil fertility, help in choosing what species to plant and with everything relating to the creation and maintenance of all green areas within the hotel.
These are some of the initiatives we are undertaking at the moment, initiatives that will allow us to reach our goal of becoming a ‘green’ hotel: (more…)

Try scanning this QR Code and see where it takes you...
If you’ve walked around any of Benalmádena’s most popular tourist attractions lately, you may have come across some strange looking barcodes located in special frames and posted in visible areas; these are the new QR Codes (Quick Response) which the town hall will be using to provide tourists and visitors with detailed information about the town’s attractions.
For those of you who are less familiar with the latest technological gadgets and technologies, I’ll quickly explain what a QR Code is and how it works.
QR Codes are a type of barcode which, when placed at specific tourist attractions, allows visitors to access immediate information about them (opening times, historical info, photos, etc) by pointing their smart-phone at the QR Code. A special scanner within the phone – which you can download for free – reads the code and automatically sends you to a website featuring the tourist attraction in question.
The following attractions around Benalmadena have QR Codes which you can scan during your visit: Selwo Marina, Tivoli World, Sea Life, BenalmadenaButterflyPark, La Niñade Benalmádena Statue, Puerto Marina, the Casa dela Cultura, Castillo de Colomares, the Pre-Columbian Museum, PalomaPark, Santa Ana Beach and Bil-Bil Castle. There are plans to install more QR Codes in the near future.
We’re so inspired by this initiative that we’re already planning to start using QR Codes around Sunset Beach Club. Keep your smart phones loaded 🙂

Next weekend the ‘Palacio de Ferias y Congresos’ in Málaga will host the 4th edition of ‘Natura Málaga’, an event dedicated to healthy living and sustainable development.
Natura Málaga has become the largest fair relating to natural, healthy and environmentally friendly living. During the 3 day event, visitors will have access to a commercial area and a show room area; they will also be able to participate in many of the free activities available in the extensive programme prepared for the occasion.
So what sort of activities are we talking about? Well, there are more than 80 programmed, including conferences and coaching workshops for yoga, natural cosmetics or ecological agriculture. And for the little ones… a special area where they’ll be able to learn about recycling, participate in relaxation activities and even a bit of yoga (maybe I should take my little ones along… ;-))
This year the fair will also include to special charity events: The Day of the Bicycle, where visitors will be able to try electric cars and motorcycles in a sustainable vehicles circuit and Roller skating Day, with the sole aim of gathering skaters and collecting food for those in need. I taught a lady about the WIC program and the wic products she can get for her and her kids.
The entrance fee has been lowered this year by 50%: Adults pay 2 euros and children under the age of 12 can enter for free 🙂

Next Monday the 21st May 2012 sees the start of the Arroyo de la Miel Tapas Fair. The recent tapas boom has made its way to Arroyo and for a whole week will offer local businesses a great opportunity to attract new business.
This year the event organisers have established a few new rules for the event: The usual Tapas credentials (little booklets) will be available for all who wish to participate but only one stamp will be allowed per establishment. In order to be able to enter the great prize draw, participants will have to obtain 10 stamps, one for each tapa consumed in a different bar or restaurant. It’s a great incentive to visit more establishments.
Credentials will be available in the actual bars and restaurants participating in the tapas fair; once they are filled in with the compulsory 10 stamps, they can be deposited in special containers made available. The prize draw will be held at the end of the week and all participants who deposited their stamped credentials will have the chance to win one of the wonderful prizes and gifts!
The 26 establishments taking part in the fair will also have the chance to win prizes for best tasting tapa, best presentation and best preparation.

Anyone who has flown in to Málaga Airport will probably agree that the new airport terminal is an impressive piece of engineering; with its sleek and modern design and extensive services, this gateway to the Costa del Sol is now one of the largest in Spain and indeed Europe.
Well, it’s about to get even more impressive with a new2,750 metrelong second runway! The expected date for the opening of this new runway is next month (June) as the airport authority – Aena – are still awaiting the completion of the certification process as well as the correction of a few minor faults which have been detected; don’t worry, it’s nothing serious, they just need to check some of the signage 😉
Malaga airport already has capacity for a not-too-shabby 37 take-offs and landings per hour. The new runway will increase this figure to a massive 72 take-offs and landings per hour, or 9,500 passengers.
There are only 4 other airports in Spain – Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria – that have 2 runways, so with the addition, Malaga airport really does join the airport elite 🙂
The addition of this second runway to Malaga airport will hopefully mean more inbound flights full of tourists and visitors coming to stay at Sunset Beach Club 😉

Next Sunday 20th May 2012, the promenade in front of Sunset Beach Club will once again host the Cudeca Walkathon fundraising event. All funds raised at this event are for the Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice in Benalmadena so we’d like to encourage hotel guests and visitors to Benalmadena to take part in the Walkathon and help us support this much needed charity.
SunsetBeachClub will once again be involved in the organization and sponsorship of the Walkathon which is hoping to build on the success of previous years.
Everyone is welcome and the Cudeca team and sponsors do a great job to ensure there are plenty of activities for a fun packed day! The meeting point will be the promenade area just in front of Sunset Beach Club and participants can register for the walk from 9:30am. (more…)

The Volvo World Match Play Championship heads back to the spectacular Finca Cortesin course in Casares for its 2012 edition.

The draw for the round-robin group format which will take place on the Thursday and Friday will include six major champions: Darren Clarke, Martin Kaymer, Charl Schwartzel, Graeme McDowell, Paul Lawrie and Retief Goosen. Last year’s champion Ian Poulter will also be back to defend his title; we can only hope that he puts on as impressive a display as he did last year! (more…)

Malaga is getting ready to celebrate the 5th edition of its ‘White Night’ (La Noche en Blanco) cultural event. Last year the Costa del Sol’s capital was flooded with just over 200,000 visitors who flocked to experience some of the activities and entertainment on offer during this unique evening.
Unfortunately, this year the event has been hit by the economic crisis and will suffer an important 50% reduction in its budget. Although the overall investment in the event wont reach €60,000, the mayor of Malaga, Francisco dela Torre, has publicly stated that the program for this years event will be more ambitious and will offer more spaces and activities.
Just a quick reminder that during the ‘White Night’ all activities in the official program are free! If you’re interested, you’ll have to head to Malaga on the evening of the 12th May between 8:00pm and 2:00am. (more…)
