Benalmadena offers much more than a summer holiday fueled by sun, sea and sangria.
To be honest, we’re a little baffled as to why our amazing city doesn’t get busier in the Winter; But that may just be what makes it so appealing to visit in the quieter months (November, December, January and February)!
The important thing to keep in mind is that, although temperatures are considerably lower than during the summer months – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing – the sun shines practically every day. Don’t forget we’re privileged to get more than 320 days of sunshine per year here on the Costa del Sol!
Whilst there are many things to do in Benalmadena in Winter, we’ve summarised some of our favourites for you.
Here goes…
Shop til you drop
The January sales are the obvious first choice when it comes to shopping (there are some fantastic bargains) but don’t worry if you are planning to visit on other dates, there are still plenty of amazing shopping centres to visit nearby.
We recommend Plaza Mayor near Málaga airport. You’ll find lots of great shops with all major brands as well as the new McArthurGlen Factory outlet where you can shop at all your favourite designer brand stores, at heavily discounted prices!
Another guest favourite is the Myramar Shopping Centre in Mijas Costa. It’s one of the Coast’s largest shopping malls with all the major high street brands.
If you’re looking for great deals and unique gifts to take home for family and friends, a trip to one of the local street markets is a great option. The linked article on our blog tells you the days, times and locations of the best markets along the Coast.
Nature Walks and Hiking
The milder temperatures experienced during the winter months make it ideal for leisurely walks along the promenade or, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, hikes in the hills behind Benalmadena.
If you’re staying with us at Sunset Beach Club we recommend you make your way out on to the promenade and head towards the Marina. It’s an easy walk which will take you approximately 30 minutes and you can choose whether to stop at one of the many bars and cafes along the way and indulge in a ‘café con leche’ or, depending on the time of day, an ice-cold cerveza!
If you plan on going hiking, we recommend you read this post on our website where you’ll find details of the six hiking routes Benalmadena has to offer. Varying in difficulty, hikers of all levels will find a route that suits them.
Enjoy some of Benalmadena’s most popular local attractions
Benalmadena has lots of great places to visit and one of the easiest ways to see them all is by jumping on the local double-decker tourist bus.
You can buy tickets at the Sunset Beach Club leisure desk located next to reception on the 6th floor of the hotel. The beauty of these bus tickets is that they are valid for 48 hours and you can jump on and off whenever you like.
Here are some of the attractions and locations you can visit on the tour:
- Cable Car (From this stop you can travel to the top of Mount Calamorro for some of the most stunning views of the Coast)
- Paloma Park – Benalmadena’s famous park with over 200,000 square metres of green area, a large lake where you can feed the fish and turtles, and ample playground area for kids.
- Bil Bil Castle
- Benalmadena Marina – Don’t forget to visit SeaLife Aquarium while you are there!
- Benal-roma ruins
- Butterfly Park – With over 1500 exotic butterflies from around the world.
- Buddhist Temple – the largest in Europe and a great spot to relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the Coast down towards Fuengirola.
Visit Málaga City centre for the ultimate culture fix
Jump on the train or the nº110 bus and head into Malaga city centre for a culture-filled day out. The Coast’s capital city is famous for it’s fantastic choice of museums including the Pompidou Centre, Picasso Museum and Thyssen Museum.
Don’t forget to stroll through the old historic city centre and the impressive Calle Larios. When you’re done, a visit to the Muelle Uno waterfront with its large selection of shops and restaurants is a great way to end your Málaga adventure. Quick tip… grab a spot at one of the bars overlooking the port and enjoy one of the stunning sunsets whilst sipping on your favourite cocktail.
