The Calamorro Skyrace will be the second event of the Merrell Skyrunner World Series and will take place on Saturday 6th April, 2024.
Securing the celebration of this prestigious event last year was a significant coup which has undoubtedly helped position Benalmadena on the national and international sports map thanks to the coverage on Spain’s Teledeporte sports channel and other global media.
But what is the Calmorro Skyrace?
Well, it’s actually one of the first Skyrunning events celebrated in Andalusia – the first edition was back in 2008.
Over the years, the event’s organisers have searched for the best possible route through our gorgeous Benalmadena mountain range and its impressive network of hiking trails.
The present course layout has been used since 2019 and it would seem they’ve hit the nail on the head as it’s now the first Skyrace event in Andalusia to be included in the Merrell Skyrunner World Series.
And what exactly is Skyrunning?
It’s a running discipline which takes place over mountains, with constant ascents and descents over rough and extremely technical trails. Participants don’t have to deal with too many level running surfaces as they’ll be dealing with steep gradients which in some cases can reach 55%.
The actual race is 27.5km long and has a 2270m slope gradient both in ascent and descent.
The event will also include a shorter race for Junior cadegories – 10.2 km and 584m slope gradient. You’ll find more information about the different routes in this link.
This year the race once again welcomes an ample list of the world’s most elite runners, including last year’s winner and 2023 World Series champ, Antonio Martínez. The winner of the ‘Northern Cliffs’, Roberto Delorenzi, will also be competing.
